Al-Makary From Dar Al-Fatwa Stresses Need To Hold Elections On Time, Highlights Media Code Of Honor

Grand Mufti of the Lebanese Republic, Sheikh Abdel Latif Derian, met on Monday with Minister of Information, Ziad Al-Makary, who visited him at Dar Al-Fatwa.

On emerging, Minister Al-Makary said that he discussed with the Mufti the circumstances that Lebanon is going through, stressing the need to hold the parliamentary elections on time, saying “the stage is delicate and difficult at all levels.”

He added: “Lebanon is not ok, and we seek to cooperate and unite as much as possible, so that we can get out of the current crises. Whenever I give a statement on any platform, I stress the need to hold elections and to reduce tense rhetoric as much as possible, without suppressing freedoms at all. Freedom of expression is a characteristic that has marked Lebanon’s media and democratic history, and the opportunity is open for democratic competition in the service of the public interest, and I have full hope Lebanon will peacefully pass this stage.”

In reply to a question about the Lebanese media role, Minister Al-Makary stressed the need to abide by the code of honor agreed upon by the media sector, and that ethics should be the salient feature in everything media outlets broadcast and publish.
