Lockdown easing decision to come after May 10: Hasan

Health Minister Hamad Hasan warned Sunday that it is not possible to build conclusive data on the results of tests conducted over the last 24 hours, which showed earlier today that only one new person had tested positive for the coronavirus – raising the total number of cases in Lebanon to 673.

As a result, Hassan stated that is is not possible to give answers as to how long the lockdown will last until after May 10.

In an interview with Al-Manar television station, Hasan said that the ministry would visit areas that have witnessed the largest spike in infections in order to carry out testing, and that the number of these conducted will be raised from 1,000 to 1,500 per day.

However, public health experts have warned that at least 2,500 tests need to be carried out daily and at random in order for lockdown measures to be eased, so the latest testing targets are still significantly under.

Earlier Sunday, Interior Minister Mohammad Fahmi issued a memorandum amending the time of the start of daily night curfew to 8 p.m. from 7 p.m., after the drop in new virus cases in recent days.

Fahmi’s memorandum also prolonged the time some shops and food delivery institutions, already excluded from public mobilization measures, can open daily. It said the new times would go into effect from Monday.
