Abdel Samad, Qattar Hold Seminar On Law To Access Information: It Is Useful To Take This Step, Albeit Late

The first technical electronic seminar introducing the Right to Information Law was held between this Thursday by the Ministries of Information and Administrative Development, and the United Nations Development Program, with the participation of caretaker ministers Manal Abdel-Samad and Demianous Qattar.

“This seminar is a prelude to others,” said Qattar, thanking Minister Abdel Samad’s persistence and enthusiasm. He said: “The symposium would not have taken place without this insistence, enthusiasm and belief in the necessity to spread knowledge on the principles, mechanisms and procedures of the law.”

He also thanked the United Nations Program for its efforts in this regard. “The Ministry of Development (…) has kept pace with the draft law on the right to access information since its preparation period, and is now participating in its implementation.”

Abdel Samad responded to Qattar’s greeting in kind, and thanked the Ministry of Administrative Development for its efforts. She also praised the United Nations Program’s contributions, and the Ministry of Information’s team effort.

She explained that “the Ministry of Information began implementing the Right to Information Law out of its respect for the law and its commitment to transparency.”

Abdel Samad added: “The role of the Ministry of Information is not limited to commitment to implementing the Right to Information Law. It rather plays a fundamental role in raising awareness on this law.”

“Lebanon has been late in putting the information law into effect, but it is useful to take this step, albeit late, as the countries of the world are now in the stage of analyzing information,” the minister added, hoping that “Lebanon will reach this stage and that the Lebanese experience will be distinguished.”
